Posted by Food Critic as Full Bar, Mexican, Take Out, college park
Paxia is a newest restaurant in the College Park area. Their menu describes themselves as “Modern World Meets Traditional Mexican Cuisine” followed by their motto, “Expect the Unexpected”. It is located across the street from Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub right on Edgewater Drive. On the night we visited it was quiet with just a couple at the bar and one other table seated. The atmosphere is warm inside and you definitely get the Mexican vibe. The restaurant is split in two, the bar area on the right and the restaurant seating area on the left. Both offer food service.
We started at the bar while we waited for our guests to arrive. The main bar is situated at the front left and the right side has comfortable lounge seating for two, big enough to relax and eat a meal. The bartender was very excited to see us and boasted of his wonderful Margarita making skills. We obliged and ordered two. They were excellent margaritas although small for $11. It was a bit pricey for the type of restaurant and locale. This isn’t New York City, its College Park in Orlando.
After our guests arrived we moved from the bar area to the restaurant area. By the time we sat down we were the only ones left. We ordered a bottle of wine and two appetizers, Queso ($9) and Guacamole ($5). The guacamole was excellent and fresh. The queso came out on a hot plate and was basically just cheese flatten out and melted on the plate. One word: dry. It just wasn’t good, that’s all I can say.
For our entrees we ordered the Flautas ($11.75) and the Skirt Steak Fajitas ($13.75). Both were good sized portions, especially the fajitas. The flautas were tasty and perfectly fried. The fajitas were loaded up with veggies and a good portion of chicken. I’d recommend both dishes. For desert we tried the Flan ($6), it was ok, nothing spectacular.
Overall it was a great meal with only a few complaints. Our waitress stated that the owner was in every night and loved to visit and chat with the guests to see if they were enjoying their meals. We were the only customers in the restaurant, yet no visit from the owner. As I said above, the prices for a margarita are too high. And finally, the bartender kept encouraging us to stay and eat at the bar and our soon to be waitress was hovering near the bar waiting to seat us. It became very apparent that they were both fighting over our tips. This was very unprofessional.
This is a new restaurant that still needs to work out its kinks. Will it be around in a year? I’d say it’s a 50/50 shot. The food was good but it always seems to be empty when I pass by. It’s hard to compete with Garibaldi’s which has consistently been rated the best authentic Mexican food in town. And as far as their motto, “Expect the Unexpected”, there was nothing unexpected about the experience.

1Very nice review! I was curious after hearing about Paxia but couldn’t find alot of information regarding it. I was mainly interested in reviewing it myself (I have just started my own Central Florida Foodie Blog) but that is a different story. Its kinda of sad to hear about the bartender and wait staff “fighting” over customers, and its disheartening to hear about the emptyness.
Perhaps I will check out Paxia, perhaps I won’t. By the way, do you happen to remember if they are open on Sunday’s or not?
(Also, I linked to your blog from mine. I hope you do not mind!)

2Awful, Awful, Awful! This review is way too kind. Anyone who has authentic Mexican food cannot justifyably say they enjoyed their meal. This is clearly a restaurant that caters to the “impression” of Mexican food and is expensive for the quality of food.

3I’m really confused by these reviews and comments.. I almost feel like I went to a different restaurant. I only have good things to say about Paxia. Although I did find the margaritas a little pricy, I thought all the food I got there was great. I loved how their menu was filled with dishes I couldn’t find at a garibaldi’s or Don Pablo’s. They seemed to have a lot of good shrimp dishes, and plenty of fresh fruit on the menu. I had a jicama (sp?) salad.. which was a cool salad with pineapple, mexican potatos, and pico de gallo. I also had an excellent chile relleno, filled with shrimp, eggplant, and cheese. It was really something else. Maybe Paxia had some problems a couple months ago, but it seems to have fixed most of those in my opinion

4Paxia has a great happy hour drink featuring 2 for 1 Margaritas and well drinks. I have to say their Margs are the best I’ve tried. Their traditional Mexican food is some of the best I’ve tried and I often have cravings for their fabulous fresh-made guacamole.

5I see that these posts were from about a year ago. I stopped into Paxia a couple weeks ago for dinner with my wife and was pleasantly surprised at both the food quality and the service. I see your point about the drinks being expensive…but there are plenty of locations around Orlando that serve lower quality drinks for higher prices (downtown). Plus, my wife asked about their happy hour and the waiter said that they do two for ones, which seems like a pretty good deal. I have no idea what they were like back in 2008, but I had a great experience here the other night. I would recommend any of their chef’s specials, since that is what my wife and I ordered off of.

6I went to Paxia about two months ago, and must say I had a pretty good experience. I thought the margaritas were very good, and the food was likewise good. I went on a Friday and the atmosphere was exactly what I was looking ofr. Good mexican food, busy, but not to crowded. I always hate it at restaurants when I have to yell or speak up to hear the others in my dinner party and Paxias set up does not allow this to happen. Overall a good experience.
